Baker's Modern Safari Chair - Mugavu

$875

Baker’s Modern Safari Chair is a passion project of ours that has been years in the making. We wanted to preserve the iconic look of the safari chair's early versions while adding a modern appeal. We designed the arms to be narrow and sharp, creating a stunning silhouette of clean angles. We added solid brass hardware, meant to uniquely patina over time for a lived-in look. And we chose buttery, tan leather—all materials that combine to inject warmth and nostalgia into any interior. To pay homage to the truly wonderful place from which the chair derives, each is accented with a Ugandan 500 Shillings coin.

This chair is masterfully handcrafted in Uganda’s capital of Kampala with a focus on quality materials: Mugavu wood for the frame, crafted and finished by a master-carpenter; heavy-gauge pure brass for the hinges, hand-cut, buffed, and polished by our in-house metal-smiths; and super sturdy yet supple leather from Kenya that will only get better with wear, hand-stitched by a group of talented seamstresses. Each chair takes about two weeks to complete from start to finish, utilizing the skill and touch of more than ten artisans, all working in fair-trade environments.

For ease in transporting, the chair folds up and can be carried. It is also available in a Teak wood base.

+ CARE

Recommended for indoor use.

To prevent the leather from fading, limit exposure to direct sunlight or heat—Spot clean leather with a damp cloth or sponge and air dry. The spot should dissipate into the leather over time. To protect and maintain the leather, we recommend using a leather conditioner as needed.

The brass pieces will develop a natural patina over time, but you can choose to keep them bright and shiny with standard brass polish. To avoid fingerprints, handle brass with a soft cloth.
