Handmade by the Fang people in the southern region of Cameroon, this wood mask is traditionally worn by spiritual leaders during festivals and ceremonies as a means to ward off evil spirits, to depict wealth and prosperity or to embody the spirits of ancestors.
This new, modern version of the Fang Mask makes for a striking display object in a well-traveled home.
Each Fang mask is hand-carved and then painted using kaolin clay pigment. It has been mounted on a black metal stand. No two are exactly alike.
